In 44 BCE the most famous Roman in history was murdered. Shakespeare’s version of this story focuses on the senators who murdered Julius Caesar and the consequences of their actions. Shakespeare was living in a time of political uncertainty. Queen Elizabeth was aging, there was no heir to the English throne, her political enemies were everywhere, and consequently, there were many attempts on her life. Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar is a cautionary tale about what happens when we use violence to solve our political problems. Brutus, Cassius, and the conspirators plan to kill the politically ambitious Caesar on the Ides of March. Caesar is repeatedly warned not to go to the capital, but he goes anyway and is assassinated by the conspirators; his friend Brutus delivers the final blow. This throws Rome into chaos and leads to civil war. Because we, like Shakespeare, live in a time of political uncertainty, this production will focus on the competing perceptions and the political questions that this play asks us to consider.
