Community involvement and social activism are very important factors in "Setting Theatre Free". More often than not, special performances are held to benefit other non-profits that tie into the theme of a particular piece. Some recent examples of such productions include:  The Diary of Anne Frank (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum & Anne Frank Center, USA), Dear Harvey (Bakersfield LGBTQ) and The Shadow Box (Ricky's Retreat).

The Empty Space has hosted Bakersfield's V-Day Campaign since 2004, working to end violence against women and girls. In that time we've raised over $25,000 for The Alliance Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault.

We have also provided sponsorship to Meet Your Neighbors, a community awareness campaign which enables the public to interact with and learn about people with all types of disabilities in Kern County.

Our art gallery recently held two benefit shows. High Sierra Mustangs (High Sierra Wild Horse Sanctuary and Gentling Center) and Silent All These Years: a group show benifiting RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network).

We also offer affordable educational workshops that provide Kern County youth with a knowlege and appreciation of the arts.
